Ensuring Access to Safe Drinking Water for Health, Dignity and Resilience
Access to safe drinking water is a fundamental human right and an essential requirement for good health, dignity and sustainable development. Yet for millions of people especially those who work or travel outdoors access to clean and cold drinking water remains a daily challenge. Rising temperatures, rapid urbanisation and increasing climate extremes have made access to safe drinking water more critical than ever.
At Viswagandha Foundation we believe that no one should have to risk their health simply because they cannot access safe drinking water. Through our Cold Drinking Water Initiative we are creating permanent public drinking water infrastructure that provides free, accessible and reliable hydration to everyone particularly the most vulnerable.
The Challenge
The ChallengeIndia experiences some of the world’s most intense summer temperatures. Heatwaves are becoming more frequent, more prolonged and more severe due to climate change placing millions of people at risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Those most affected are often people whose livelihoods or daily routines require them to spend long hours outdoors with limited access to safe drinking water. These include:
- Daily wage labourers
- Construction workers
- Street vendors and hawkers
- Truck and bus drivers
- Auto-rickshaw and cycle-rickshaw pullers
- Delivery personnel
- Sanitation workers and waste collectors
- Security personnel
- Elderly citizens
- Travellers and commuters
For many of these individuals purchasing bottled drinking water throughout the day is neither practical nor affordable while access to free safe drinking water in public spaces remains limited.
Expanding equitable access to safe drinking water is therefore not only a public health priority but also an important step towards protecting vulnerable populations, strengthening climate resilience and building healthier more inclusive communities.
Our Solution
Our SolutionThe Cold Drinking Water Initiative establishes permanent cold drinking water machines in high-footfall public locations where access to safe drinking water is limited.
Each installation provides free, clean and chilled drinking water throughout the day helping thousands of people stay hydrated during extreme weather conditions.
Unlike short-term relief efforts these installations continue serving communities every day creating lasting public infrastructure that improves health, well-being and resilience.
