Two day National Symposium on “International Year of Chemistry – IYC 2011” under the unifying theme “Chemistry – Our Life, Our Future” held at CMERI (CSIR), Durgapur during December 17 – 18, 2011. The IYC is a joint initiative of the “International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC)” and the “United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)” involves chemical societies, academics, institutions, chemical industries etc. The IYC 2011 marks the 100th to anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Marie Sklodowska Curie, recognizing her discovery of the elements radium and polonium. Dr. Curie’s achievements continue to inspire students, especially women, to pursue careers in chemistry. It is a global celebration of achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind with a strong emphasis on education, public engagement and the involvement of young people with events at national, regional and global level throughout the whole of 2011. This Year is also 150th Birth Anniversary of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy.
